This job contributes to REI's success by leading and growing REI's
regional outdoor programs and outreach. The Outdoor Programs and
Outreach (OPO) Market Manager reports to the Outdoor Programs and
Outreach Manager. The position is located within a retail market and
oversees REI Outdoor education, volunteerism, recreation programs, and
events within a given geographic region. The OPO Market Manager is
responsible for driving participation and program growth, managing and
training instructional and outreach staff, leading corporate initiatives
at a regional and market level, and serving as the main point of contact
for community engagement, outdoor program risk management, land
agencies, and retail management. 1-3 Sr. Instructors, 1 Market Outreach
Specialist and 10 -15 part time instructors will report to the OPO
Market Manager. The OPO Market Manager will also oversee the program
planning and work of the Outreach Specialists, who report to a store
manager, within a given market. The OPO Market Manager is responsible
for the consistency in quality and program delivery of all field and in
store programs. Some additional responsibilities include: primary
regional budget management, local and regional marketing implementation,
contract negotiations and partnerships, program assortment and planning,
program assessment and reporting, program operations, regional expansion
management, coordination of local public relations efforts.
This position can be located at the Rockville, MD or Fairfax, VA retail
store.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience managing a virtual and/or distributed team
over a large region
- Experience managing contract negotiations, in particular with land
agencies and community organizations
- 3-5 years of experience managing 2 or more of the following:
event/sponsorship, community relations, outdoor recreation programs
- Excellent written, verbal and listening communication skills. Proven
ability to communicate effectively in team environments, to build and
foster effective working relationships within REI and with multiple
business partners.
- Experience managing budgets over $200,000
- Proven successful experience in creating annual plans, budgeting,
execution, and evaluation
- Working knowledge of legal, regulatory, and risk management issues
related to outdoor recreation
- Wilderness First Aid or First Responder Certification (within 1st 3
months of hire)
- BA degree in business management, or outdoor recreation management or
equivalent a plus
- Proven ability to build and cultivate relationships within the
community
- Ability to acquire a CDL and/or drive a 15 passenger van and loaded
trailer - valid driver's license
- Ability to effectively create program assortments which will maximize
outdoor participation and revenue for a given region
